On many projects, inspectors and contractors automatically drill drain holes because the method statement or inspection checklist requires them. But have you ever stopped to ask<span> </span><strong>why</strong><span> </span>they are there?</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">For hot insulation, the answer is quite clear. Water can enter the cladding through joints, damaged areas, or during heavy rain. Drain holes allow this water to escape and help reduce the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI).</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">Cold insulation, however, is a different story.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">The main purpose of a cold insulation system is to keep warm, moist air away from the cold pipe or equipment. This is achieved by using a continuous vapor barrier. If moisture reaches the cold surface, it condenses into water, reducing insulation performance and potentially causing corrosion.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">This is where the debate begins.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">Some insulation standards focus on maintaining a completely vapor-tight system, while many project method statements specify drain holes in the outer metal cladding. At first glance, these two ideas seem to contradict each other.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">So, are drain holes on cold insulation wrong?</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">Not necessarily.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">In many projects, the drain holes are intended only for the<span> </span><strong>outer metal cladding</strong>. Their purpose is to allow any rainwater or moisture trapped<span> </span><strong>between the weather jacket and the vapor barrier</strong><span> </span>to drain away. The vapor barrier itself remains continuous and should not be damaged. In this case, the drain holes do not compromise the insulation system because they are not penetrating the vapor barrier.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">On the other hand, if someone drills holes through the entire insulation system, including the vapor barrier, the situation is completely different. That can allow moist air to enter the insulation, which is exactly what the vapor barrier is designed to prevent.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">As inspectors, we sometimes focus on checking whether drain holes have been provided, but we rarely ask an equally important question:</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd"><strong>Where do those drain holes actually end?</strong></p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">Are they only in the metal cladding, or do they pass through the vapor barrier as well?</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">This small detail can make a significant difference to the long-term performance of the insulation system.</p>
<p class="yiv3884031807ydp1790b73disSelectedEnd">Rather than assuming that drain holes are always required—or never required—it is worth reviewing the approved insulation details, project specifications, and method statement together. Understanding the design intent is just as important as checking compliance.</p>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Selecting the correct coating system is usually straightforward when the operating temperature is clearly defined. However, some piping systems do not operate under constant conditions, making coating selection much more challenging.</p>
<p>During a recent maintenance project, our team encountered an interesting situation while preparing a process line for abrasive blasting and recoating.</p>
<p>According to the project coating specification, the coating system to be applied depends on the operating temperature of the line. Before proceeding with blasting, a temperature survey was carried out on site. Surprisingly, the measured pipe surface temperature was below<span> </span><strong>55°C</strong>, which meant the line appeared to fall within the temperature range for the standard coating system specified by the project.</p>
<p>However, the operating team informed us that the line does not remain at the same temperature throughout its service. At certain times, the process temperature increases significantly, while during other operating conditions, condensation (sweating) can be observed on the external pipe surface.</p>
<p>To verify the actual condition, the site team decided to recheck the pipe temperature after blasting. If the measured temperature remained below<span> </span><strong>55°C</strong>, the work would proceed in accordance with the project specification.</p>
<p>This raised an important question among the inspection and engineering teams.</p>
<p>Should the coating system be selected based on the actual temperature measured during maintenance? Or should it be based on the maximum operating temperature specified in the process design, even if the pipe is currently operating below that value?</p>
<p>Another concern was the repeated occurrence of condensation. Although the measured temperature was below the project threshold, the presence of sweating indicated that the pipe was regularly exposed to moisture, which could increase the risk of corrosion if an unsuitable coating system was selected.</p>
<p>Situations like this are not uncommon in refineries, gas processing plants, and petrochemical facilities where process conditions can change depending on production demand, shutdowns, or seasonal operation. In such cases, selecting the correct coating system requires more than simply checking the pipe temperature on a single day.</p>
<p>It also highlights the importance of communication between the coating inspector, process engineer, operations team, and coating manufacturer before any repair work begins.</p>

<p class="isSelectedEnd"><span>During a structural steel painting project, the painting contractor was ready to start primer application early in the morning. Surface preparation had been completed, and all equipment was in place. Before work started, the coating inspector carried out the routine environmental checks, including Relative Humidity (RH), Air Temperature, Steel Temperature, Surface Temperature, and Dew Point.</span></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><span>The readings showed that the Relative Humidity was much higher than the project specification limit, and the steel temperature was very close to the dew point temperature. Although the surface looked dry, there was a risk of moisture forming on the steel during coating application.</span></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><span>The contractor was keen to proceed because of schedule pressure, but the inspector recorded the readings and informed the client representative. After reviewing the inspection report, the client instructed the contractor to stop painting activities until the weather conditions improved.</span></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><span>The work was delayed for a few hours and restarted later when the environmental conditions were within the acceptable limits.</span></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><span>The client appreciated the decision because painting under those conditions could have resulted in coating defects such as poor adhesion, blistering, flash rusting, or premature coating failure. A few hours of delay helped avoid possible rework and additional maintenance costs in the future.</span></p>
<p><span>This incident was a good reminder that successful painting is not only about selecting the right coating system. Proper surface preparation, suitable weather conditions, and thorough inspection are equally important for achieving long-term coating performance.</span></p>
